The vote did not happen. According to the published draft agenda, the item was replaced by a 25-minute “continued discussion” about the Dutch request to extend the approval across the whole European Union. The next meeting is in December.

So December is now the earliest possible formal vote. Add the holiday calendar and the number of countries still asking questions, and the realistic window is early 2027.

Elon Musk, on last week’s earnings call, put it like this: “We are now approved in many countries in Europe, and we hope for EU-wide approval. It’s hard to predict, but maybe within a few months, but I would be surprised if it takes longer than Q1. But obviously, that’s not a timeframe we control.”

That last sentence is the most honest thing anyone has said about this all year.

Where it actually stands: nine countries out of twenty-seven

Netherlands – approved first, by the RDW, on 10 April 2026

Lithuania, Estonia, Denmark, Belgium, Slovenia, Czechia, Croatia – recognised the Dutch decision afterwards

Slovakia – the ninth, on 16 October

Luxembourg – declined a national approval and pointed at the EU procedure instead

Germany – has said it will push for the bloc-wide vote

A bloc-wide approval works differently from a national one. The Dutch authority has to send the request to the European Commission, and then a qualified majority of member states has to vote for it. Nobody has put a date on that vote. Not Tesla, not the Commission.

That is the whole story, and it is not dramatic. It is just slow.

The detail almost nobody quoted: it was renamed in Europe

Earlier this month, Tesla quietly changed the name of the feature on most of its European websites. FSD (Supervised) became “Tesla Assisted Driving.” That followed talks with the German transport ministry, which also agreed the system may run up to 10% over the posted speed limit.

That is not marketing fluff. It tells you exactly what you are buying: a Level 2 assistance system, with you still legally responsible, in a car that will follow a local limit within a tolerance a regulator has signed off on. Anyone who has driven a French autoroute or the A22 in Italy knows why that tolerance exists – and also why it will feel cautious in traffic where everyone around you is going faster.

The story from Sunday that matters more if you camp

On 25 October, Tesla confirmed it is building its own AI-based mapping and navigation system, and that it ships with FSD v15.

Right now the navigation is a hybrid. Map tiles, street data, satellite imagery, points of interest and traffic come from outside suppliers; Tesla builds the app and calculates the routes itself. A shareholder on the call pointed out that the car still gets speed limits, parking and route choices wrong sometimes, and Ashok Elluswamy agreed: “You are quite right, we should never have relied on an external vendor’s maps.”

The new system flips that around. The fleet collects the street data itself – speeds, stop signs, traffic lights, car parks – and richer things get layered on top: potholes, entrances with a blocked sight line, junctions with a bad record. It arrives first on the departure and arrival legs of a trip, then spreads to parking and voice-controlled routing over the following months.

Why should a camper care? Because the last two kilometres of any camping trip are the two kilometres no map company has ever cared about. The campsite entrance that is a gap in a hedge. The gravel track with no name. The farm lane your satnav believes is a road and your suspension disagrees with. That is precisely the kind of data a fleet of real customer cars can collect and a licensing agreement cannot.

It is also the reason the current system, wherever you live, is worth using with your eyes open. Motorway: genuinely relaxing. A wet single-track lane at dusk with a hand-painted sign and no street lighting: all yours.

Two small things in the current update that are actually useful

The 2026.38 software release is not an exciting one. Two features in it are worth knowing if you sleep in the car:

Set Arrival Energy. In the location tab of the app you can now set how much charge you want left when you arrive, not just how much you want before you leave. It needs app version 4.58.0 or later

Supercharger site maps. At pilot locations you can see the layout and the live status of each stall – available, occupied or down – as you arrive. No more queueing for a bay that turns out to be out of service

Set Arrival Energy is the one that changes a camping night. You can tell the car “arrive at the pitch with 60%”, and that is a night of climate control plus a morning drive to a charger, decided in advance instead of doing arithmetic at a service station at nine in the evening.

What to be sceptical about

A “continued discussion” is not a decision. It is an agenda item that got shorter

Nine countries is not Europe. If you live somewhere without a national approval, nothing about your car changes this month

10% over the limit is a permission, not a behaviour. Do not expect it to keep pace with local traffic

v15 has not shipped to European cars yet. The map story is a roadmap, not a release note

There is a commercial push underneath all this. Tesla’s finance chief said on the call that the company is “taking extra steps to sell certain cars in Europe with some benefits” to grow the fleet before a broader approval lands. Nothing wrong with that – just read the enthusiasm accordingly

The part that has not changed

Assisted driving makes a long drive less tiring. It does not find your pitch, level the car, or make the bed. And the car you already own is the one you will be sleeping in this winter, whatever the committee decides in December.

The kit that does the part the software cannot:

Tablet Mount Holder – navigation at eye level, where you can read it in one glance instead of looking down at a screen in the dark

2048Wh LiFePO4 Portable Power Station – 2048Wh, so the lights, the fridge and the phone stay off the car’s range

35L Dual-Zone Compressor Fridge – dual-zone, 12V, no ice needed, which matters when the nearest shop shut for the season in September

Tesla Inflatable Air Mattress – a real bed inside the car, up in two minutes, packed away before the gate closes

Tesla Trunk Organiser Box – so that finding a torch at half past five in the evening does not involve unpacking the entire boot

Buy the kit you need now.
