Not permanently, and not everywhere, but enough that delivery dates on the configurator have started sliding into next year – and if you were quietly planning to buy a Model Y for the 2027 camping season, that changes your calendar.

What is actually sold out

In the United States, the 2026-deliverable allocation of the Model Y L is gone. New orders are being quoted for January to February 2027, which works out at a three to four month wait. The rear-wheel-drive Model 3 has sold out too, and the Model Y rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions are described as close behind.

In China, the Model Y Long Range rear- and all-wheel-drive delivery estimate has stretched from three to five weeks to five to seven weeks.

In Europe the picture is demand rather than empty warehouses, and it is striking. The Model Y is currently the best-selling car of any type across Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden – all five Nordic markets at once – and it topped the German all-powertrain chart in September with 8,038 registrations, ahead of the VW Golf and the Tiguan. Giga Berlin has only just moved up to a rate of 7,500 cars a week. For some German configurations, the official configurator is already showing January to February 2027.

Tesla’s third-quarter results are due on 21 October, a day after this is published, so some of this may get a number attached to it very soon.

Three honest caveats

Most of the sold-out reporting is not from Tesla. It comes from X accounts and dealer and broker blogs watching the inventory pages, not from an official statement. Treat the specific dates as directional rather than contractual.

Inventory moves daily. Cancelled orders, cars redirected from other markets and end-of-quarter pushes all change the page. “Sold out” in October can be “available in three weeks” in November.

Some of the spike is hype, not households. The Roadster was finally revealed on 15 October after nine years, the Cybercab is drawing crowds at the Paris motor show, and assisted driving is back in the news in Europe. Attention sells cars in the short term and then fades.

What this means if you are planning trips, not trades

Assume for a moment that the wait is real. The practical consequences for a camper are boring but concrete:

If you want the car for spring, the decision is today, not April. A January or February delivery still gives you the whole run-up to the season. An order placed in March may not.

Check the estimated delivery date before you pay anything. The configurator states it per configuration. Some versions are quick; the popular ones are not.

Mind the gap at the other end. A lease or rental that ends in December gets expensive and stressful if the replacement arrives in March. Trade-in values can also move between order and delivery.

A used one is immediate. Three-year-old Model Ys are now the fastest-selling used electric family SUVs in several European markets for a reason: the flat-folding boot, the heat pump, Camp Mode and Supercharger access all survive being second-hand.

And here is the part that is genuinely independent of all of it. The kit does not care whether your car arrives in six weeks or six months, and it fits every Model Y of every year. If anything, buying it now is the sensible move, because the first trip with a new car is always the one where you discover what you do not have:

Tesla Inflatable Air Mattress – the car becomes a bed in a couple of minutes, and works the day you collect it

2048Wh LiFePO4 Portable Power Station – 2048Wh for lights, pumps and phones, so a night at the pitch never eats the car’s own range

Tesla Induction Cooktop – a hot meal without fighting a camp stove in the wind

35L Dual-Zone Compressor Fridge – dual-zone cooling for the long, hot trips you will actually be taking in July

Tesla Trunk Organiser Box – so the boot stays usable when it is raining and you cannot unpack properly

Tablet Mount Holder – navigation, charging stops and the weather warning you should have read an hour ago

The boring advice

Do not buy a car in a panic because a blogger said inventory was low. But do check the delivery date, work backwards from the weekend you actually want to be away, and remember that a factory running at 7,500 cars a week in Germany is a factory that is busy because people are buying – which is, on the whole, good news for anyone who camps in one. More of them on the road means more of them at the pitch, and more reason for campsites to keep adding the thing you need most: a working charger.

Either way, get the kit sorted first. The car will turn up.

Something slightly unfamiliar has happened to Tesla in the last couple of weeks: it has run out of cars.
