People who sleep in their own vehicle do not take a hotel bed, but they do eat in the restaurants, drink in the wine taverns and shop in the bakeries. The money goes straight into the town, and the town does not have to build a hotel.

What is actually being built

Alsfeld – a town of half-timbered houses where the motorhome stopover now accounts for one in four overnight stays in the whole town. It is being expanded.

Kiedrich, in the Rheingau – a wine village that has just opened three new pitches. October is harvest time there, which means new wine and open cellar doors.

Upper Hesse, for the 2027 Landesgartenschau garden show – eleven municipalities have found room for almost 100 more pitches, mainly at the spa town of Nidda-Bad Salzhausen, plus Gedern and Büdingen.

The Upper Hesse ones are the clever ones: in autumn there are very few tourists, and the thermal baths and parkland are often a few minutes’ walk from the pitch. A spa town in October, with nobody else there, is a very good place to spend a weekend.

Why Germany is the easy country for this

Germany has more than 4,000 official Stellplätze – designated motorhome pitches – and a large share of them are either free or cost somewhere in the region of €5 to €15 a night. They are usually simple: a level gravel or paved area, often with a water point and a disposal point, and usually within walking distance of the town centre. No reception, no minimum stay, no booking three months ahead.

Germany is also Europe’s biggest camping nation, and the Model Y was Germany’s best-selling car of any type in September. Charging is not the problem it was even two years ago, and you will not be the only electric car on the pitch.

One honest caveat: most Stellplätze are signed for motorhomes (Wohnmobile). A car with a rooftop tent is often fine and often welcomed, but it is not automatic – ask the town’s tourist office or just book a proper campsite pitch instead. Do not assume.

What to watch out for this month

Autumn in southern Europe is storm season, and the last fortnight has proved it.

A tornado on the Siena-Florence motorway flipped a camper in a motorway rest area, and two people were taken for medical care. Separately, a rare large tornado hit western Sicily on 9 October, overturning vehicles and damaging buildings. Italy’s civil protection department has been issuing orange and yellow alerts across much of the country.

The rule that comes out of it is a simple one: when an orange weather warning is in force, do not spend the night in an open motorway rest area or on high, exposed ground. Pick somewhere sheltered by buildings, or by trees that do not have dead branches above you. A motorway lay-by at 2am in a windstorm is the worst possible place to be.

And if the worst does happen: after the storms in Hérault, Gard and Le Grau-du-Roi in the south of France, lawyers have been reminding people that insurers generally only pay out under storm cover if you can prove the wind strength. Photograph the damage, and keep the Météo-France report, news links and contact details for any witnesses.

The kit for a German autumn pitch

October pitches are cheap, quiet and cold at night. Camp Mode keeps the cabin warm with no gas and no exhaust, which is the whole point, but the rest of the kit is what makes it comfortable:

Tesla Roof Top Tent – off the damp ground and ready in minutes when you arrive after dark

2048Wh LiFePO4 Portable Power Station – keeps lights, pumps and phones running without touching the car battery, and keeps you online for weather warnings

Tesla Induction Cooktop – a hot meal at the pitch without wrestling a camp stove in the wind

35L Dual-Zone Compressor Fridge – cold wine, cold beer, and actual food on day three

Magnetic Mesh Bug Screens – fresh air without the midges and the spiders

Tesla Trunk Organiser Box – so the boot is still organised when it is raining and you cannot unpack properly

Tablet Mount Holder – navigation and the harvest festival timetable you looked up five minutes ago

Go in October. The wine is new, the pitches are empty, the thermal baths are open and the towns are actively trying to get you to stop.

Here is a small, very European piece of good news for anyone who camps in autumn: towns in the German state of Hesse have worked out that motorhome and camper tourists are the best kind of tourist, and they are building pitches to attract them.
