Not the best-selling electric car. The best-selling car, full stop.

According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority, 8,038 Model Ys were registered in September – a 260.9% jump on the same month last year. The Volkswagen Golf came second with 6,580, and the VW Tiguan third with 5,751.

In other words, the Golf lost its own home market to an electric SUV built an hour down the road in Brandenburg. It has only happened once before – September 2022 – and 8,038 is also a new monthly record for the Model Y, beating the 6,841 it managed in March.

The rest of the numbers

Model 3: 4,512 registrations, up 284.7% – sixth of all cars, and number one in the mid-size class

Tesla total: 12,552, up 268.7%, putting it seventh among all brands with a 4.9% share

Tesla was Germany’s best-selling electric brand, ahead of Volkswagen and Skoda

Battery-electric cars hit a record 34.5% of the market – 88,599 registrations, up 94.7%

All cars with an alternative drivetrain together took 73.6% of the 256,774 new registrations

And it wasn’t only Germany. The Model Y also topped the chart in France with 8,183 registrations, ahead of the Peugeot 208 and Renault Clio – and notably, 6,908 of those went to private buyers, up 84.7%. In Spain, the Model 3 became the first electric car ever to finish a month as the country’s best-selling car of any type, with 2,528 registrations.

Two honest caveats before we get carried away

First, Tesla’s delivery cycle does load up the last month of a quarter, so September always flatters it. Second, over the full year to date the Model Y sits second among electric cars in Germany with 29,464 registrations, behind the Skoda Elroq. One month is one month.

But the direction isn’t really in doubt any more, and the interesting bit for us is not the sales chart. It’s what happens now that hundreds of thousands of these things are sitting in German driveways.

Germany camps more than anywhere else in Europe

Germany is the biggest camping nation on the continent – more campsites, more pitches and more nights slept outdoors than anywhere else. Germans are also the largest single group of foreign campers in Italy, Croatia, Austria and Denmark. And crucially, they don’t stop in October.

The German autumn school holidays fall in October, with each state setting its own dates, and that’s traditionally the last big camping weekend of the year. It is also the cheapest and quietest time you will find: off-season pitches across Europe run roughly a third below August prices, and the Black Forest, the Moselle valley, the Allgäu and the Lüneburg Heath are all at their best rather than their busiest.

What Germany also has, and most countries don’t, is the Stellplatz – tens of thousands of designated overnight spots, often cheap or free, frequently with water and waste disposal, and specifically designed for sleeping in a vehicle rather than next to one. If you own a car you can sleep in, Germany is the easiest country in Europe to do it in.

Why the Model Y in particular works for this

It’s not marketing. It’s just geometry and thermodynamics.

The boot folds flat. Over 2,000 litres with the rear seats down, and the floor is genuinely flat with no lip. That’s a bed, not a boot. A Tesla Inflatable Air Mattress cut to the Tesla floor turns it into one in about four minutes, with no gap at the edges for a cold hip to find at 3am.

Camp Mode heats a sealed cabin all night. No gas bottle, no carbon monoxide, no generator buzzing at six in the morning. On an October night in the Eifel, when it drops to three or four degrees, this is the difference between camping and shivering. And you can start the heating from the app before you get out of the restaurant.

It’s quiet. German campsites are famously orderly, and turning up in something that makes no noise at all is a social advantage, not just an environmental one.

The kit that actually matters in October

Cold and dark are the two problems. Here’s what solves them.

A 2048Wh LiFePO4 Portable Power Station is the single biggest quality-of-life upgrade you can make. It runs the lights, the laptops, the water pump and the kettle all evening without touching the car’s battery at all – so you arrive at breakfast with a full car instead of one you have to go and charge. Pair it with the 35L Dual-Zone Compressor Fridge and one proper supermarket shop lasts the whole trip, with one side set as a freezer.

For cooking, the Tesla Induction Cooktop is the right answer in an electric car – fast, precisely controllable, and no gas canister to squeeze into the frunk. Then there’s the boring essential: Tesla Trunk Organiser Box, because a five-day trip without boot storage becomes a permanent rummage by day two.

If you’d rather sleep above the mud than inside the car, the Tesla Roof Top Tent gives you a flat, dry, ventilated room that goes up in minutes and doesn’t care how wet the pitch is. Magnetic Mesh Bug Screens keep air moving through the car on milder afternoons without letting things in, and Tablet Mount Holder puts the screen somewhere you can actually use it for route planning and an evening film.

Three things to get right

Arrive with margin. Cold batteries charge slower and Camp Mode genuinely uses range overnight. Plan to reach the pitch with more left than you would in July, and pre-heat while you’re still plugged in.

Check the site is open. Plenty of German sites close after October, but a large number – including most of the big KNAUS and ADAC-affiliated parks – run all winter. Ring ahead rather than assuming.

Get a discount card. ACSI and ADAC camping guides knock a real percentage off pitches in the off-season, and in a country with this many sites the card pays for itself in about four nights.

The short version

The Golf has been Germany’s default car for roughly fifty years. In September it wasn’t. That’s the headline, and it’s a big one.

But the more useful story is the second-order one: the most popular car in Europe’s biggest camping nation is now a car with a flat-folding 2,000-litre boot, all-night heating with no exhaust, and enough battery to run a campsite. Germany worked out what it wanted. It bought it in record numbers, and then it’s going to take it camping.

Some news from Germany that would have been unthinkable five years ago: in September, the Tesla Model Y was the best-selling car in the country.
