Tesla’s stand is C25 in Hall 7.1, and it is open for the full run of the show.

It’s worth being clear about one thing before anyone gets excited: this is not a concept car, but it is also not a car you can buy. The one on the stand comes from Tesla’s working robotaxi fleet in Austin, where paid rides began on 3 September. You can walk around it. You cannot drive it, because there is nothing to drive it with.

What’s actually on the Tesla stand

Quite a lot more than one gold pod, as it happens:

Cybercab – two seats, butterfly doors, a 22-inch central screen, no driver controls at all

Model 3 and Model Y – the cars you can actually order

Optimus Gen 2 – the humanoid robot, in the metal

Tesla Energy home charging products and a Supercharger unit

Sales, technical and approved-used teams on hand all week

Free assisted-driving test drives in six Tesla cars, running throughout the show

That last one is the genuinely useful bit. Tesla says its supervised driving software has now covered more than 100 million kilometres in the seven European countries where it is approved, and that cars running it are 4.1 times less likely to be involved in a crash. Whatever you think of those numbers, you can go and try it for free this week instead of arguing about them online.

Here’s the thing campers should notice

The Cybercab has two seats and a hatchback boot designed for luggage, not for living out of. It cannot tow. It has nowhere to put a fridge, and if the battery runs low at a campsite in the Ardèche you cannot just get in and drive it home, because it drives itself or not at all.

It is a brilliant piece of engineering for a problem most of us don’t have. The car that solves our problem is standing about ten metres away from it, and it’s been on sale for years.

And France, of all places, is where that lands hardest. France is Europe’s biggest camping nation by a distance – tens of thousands of pitches, a campsite in practically every commune, and a summer where the whole country seems to sleep outdoors. The Model Y was the best-selling car of any type in France earlier this year, which tells you the country has already worked out what it wants.

The other thing that changed this week

On 8 October, Tesla quietly started replacing the “Full Self-Driving (Supervised)” name on its European websites with “Tesla Assisted Driving”. It came out of talks with Germany’s transport ministry, which called the old name somewhat misleading – accurate, given the driver is still legally responsible the entire time.

Nothing about the software changed. It still does motorway and city navigation, lane changes, roundabouts, summon and parking. But it is a Level 2 system, and now it says so on the tin.

Where it stands right now:

Eight EU countries have approved it nationally, with Slovakia expected to be ninth within days

Germany is now pushing for prompt EU-wide approval, and has agreed the system may exceed the detected limit by up to 10%

France and Sweden have objected, and the EU-wide vote has slipped from October to at least December

Tesla needs 15 of 27 member states, covering 65% of the EU population, to get blanket approval

No European Cybercab launch is planned – though when a German owner asked, Musk replied “hopefully soon in Europe too”

For camping, the practical version of all this is unglamorous and genuinely good: the boring six-hour motorway grind to the coast is the part that wears you out before you’ve even put the tent up. That is exactly the part this software is for. And it arrives by free over-the-air update, not by buying a new car.

If you’re going to Paris this week

Go and see the Cybercab, because it is a genuinely strange and interesting object and you may not get another chance. Then take the free test drive, because that’s the bit you’ll actually use on the way to a campsite.

And if you’re driving down rather than flying – which, given France, you should – the Model Y is a perfectly good place to sleep when you get there. A Tesla Roof Top Tent turns it into a two-storey bedroom in about four minutes and keeps you off wet ground, which in October in France is not a hypothetical. The Tesla Inflatable Air Mattress does the same job inside the car if you’d rather stay low and warm, and it’s cut to the Tesla floor so there’s no gap at the edges for your hip to find at 3am.

Then the boring stuff that makes a trip work. A 2048Wh LiFePO4 Portable Power Station runs the lights, the pump and the laptops all evening without touching the car’s battery, so the car is still full in the morning. Pair it with the 35L Dual-Zone Compressor Fridge and you’re eating properly for a week rather than living out of a cool bag. The Tesla Induction Cooktop is the right way to cook in an electric car – fast, controlled, and no gas bottle to worry about – and Tesla Trunk Organiser Box is what stops a five-day trip turning into a permanent rummage.

Add Tablet Mount Holder so the screen is usable for route planning and evening films from the awning, and that’s the kit list done.

Two honest caveats

“Assisted” means assisted. You are driving. Keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road, especially on unfamiliar French departmental roads at dusk with cyclists and tractors about.

The Cybercab is a show car in Europe. There is no launch date, no price and no confirmed plan. Don’t wait for it. The Model Y on the same stand will carry your tent this weekend.

The short version

Tesla brought the future to Paris, and the future has two seats, no pedals and nowhere to put a fridge. Nice to look at. Not much use to us.

The present is standing next to it: a car with a 2,000-litre boot that folds flat, Camp Mode that heats a sealed cabin all night with no exhaust and no generator, and Superchargers on practically every motorway between Calais and Perpignan. Go and look at the robot. Then drive the other one home.

The Paris Motor Show opens today, and Tesla has brought the strangest car it has ever built.
