The UN Tourism Panel of Experts then found 43% of industry experts expect conditions to improve through December. But the interesting figure is buried one level down: nights booked by international visitors grew 2.5% while domestic nights grew just 0.9%. Europe is busier, and it is busy with people driving in from somewhere else.

Where the Growth Actually Landed

National breakdowns from the same Eurostat data show the pattern clearly, and it is not where most people expect:

Country

H1 2026 nights

Change

Camping signal

Sweden

27.94 million

+1.5%

Camping nights +3.9%; July international arrivals +9.9%

Norway

17.73 million

+1.7%

International nights +5.5%; July camping stays +6.9%

Austria

65.71 million

+1.8%

May–Jul 41.87m = all-time record since 1973

Two things jump out. In Norway, domestic nights actually fell 0.1% while international ones jumped 5.5% — the growth is entirely visitors crossing a border. And in July, Norwegian camping stays rose 6.9% and Swedish camping nights 3.9%, both comfortably ahead of accommodation overall. Camping is not just keeping pace with the boom; in the Nordics it is outrunning it.

Austria is the clearest case of pressure: May to July 2026 produced 41.87 million nights, an all-time high in records going back to 1973, with July arrivals up 9.3%.

What That Means If You Are Booking a Trip

The practical translation, according to the same analysis, is unglamorous and worth knowing before you plan anything for October:

Hotels in capitals and seasonal resorts are hitting capacity, and average rates are rising with it.

Booking windows are shrinking. A 9.9% July jump in international arrivals to Sweden makes last-minute booking in a peak window a genuine gamble.

Non-hotel accommodation is absorbing the growth — regulated campsites and holiday rentals are taking the share hotels cannot.

Airports and transit are more congested, with 2.5% more international nights across the EU.

Read that list again and one answer is obvious: the reliable way to travel in a crowded year is to bring the room with you. Not a booking you might not get. A room you already own, that heats itself, powers itself, and does not care whether the town is full.

The Industry Is Going Small, Light and Electric

The manufacturers have reached the same conclusion from the other direction. At the 60th Salon du Véhicule de Loisirs in Le Bourget, running until 4 October, the surprise trend is the return of the low-profile caravan — under two metres high. The reason given is precisely that they are light and aerodynamic enough to be towed by electric cars, at €20,000–30,000 against €50,000-plus for a van conversion. Spanish firm Vancubic is showing a cube module with inflatable walls that drops into any L2H2 van in about an hour, from €16,000.

A Model Y’s braked towing limit of 1,600 kg genuinely covers the lighter end of that new generation — though towing will cut your range meaningfully, so plan the charging stops. Or skip the trailer entirely: a rooftop tent is lighter, cheaper, and does not need a second parking space at the pitch.

The Kit That Turns a Busy Year Into a Good One

If the pitch you want is full and the town is booked out, the difference between a ruined weekend and a great one is whether the car can look after itself. That comes down to four things:

2048Wh LiFePO4 Portable Power Station — your own electricity anywhere. This is what lets you take the pitch nobody else wants, and it is usually the cheaper one.

35L Dual-Zone Compressor Fridge — cold food and drinks for days, so a full supermarket car park does not matter.

Tesla Roof Top Tent — a bed that is always with you, up off wet ground, ready in minutes.

Tesla Induction Cooktop — a hot meal with no flame, which is permitted on essentially every pitch in Europe.

And the two that make it comfortable rather than merely possible:

Tesla Trunk Organiser Box — so living out of the boot does not mean digging through it.

Magnetic Mesh Bug Screens — windows open for airflow on a warm autumn night, insects outside.

Tesla Inflatable Air Mattress — the fallback bed for the nights the tent feels like too much effort.

The Bottom Line

1.321 billion nights, international travel growing nearly three times faster than domestic, and camping outrunning the market in Scandinavia while Austria posts a record going back to 1973. Europe is having a very busy year, and hotels are the part under strain. Camping is where that pressure is going — which is good news if you have a car that can be a room. Bring your own power, your own fridge and your own bed, and a full town stops being a problem. The 2048Wh LiFePO4 Portable Power Station plus the Tesla Roof Top Tent is the combination that makes it work.

Two sets of numbers landed this month, and read together they explain something European campers have already noticed on the ground: the crowds came back, the hotels filled up, and camping absorbed the overflow.
