Spain has restricted vehicles over 3.5 tonnes in major tourist zones. Andorra started issuing \u20ac600 fines. The Peak District introduced no-stopping Red Routes. Asturian towns brought in 48-hour limits and \u20ac500 penalties.<\/p>\n<p>Read the headlines and you would think car camping is dead. Read the actual regulations and something different emerges: <strong>almost all of these rules target large, obvious recreational vehicles and &#8220;camping behaviour&#8221; \u2014 not a normal-sized car parked normally.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A Tesla Model 3 or Model Y is 4.7\u20134.8 metres long, under 2.5 tonnes, and looks exactly like every other car in the car park. That is a genuine legal advantage, and this guide explains how to use it properly.<\/p>\n<h2>The Single Most Important Distinction in Europe<\/h2>\n<p>Almost every European country separates two things that tourists constantly confuse:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Overnighting (Spanish: <em>pernoctar<\/em>)<\/strong> \u2014 sleeping inside a legally parked vehicle, with nothing outside it. In most places, this is simply parking. It is generally legal.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Camping (Spanish: <em>acampar<\/em>)<\/strong> \u2014 chairs, tables, awnings, cooking outside, levelling chocks, washing lines. This is what gets fined.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Spanish camper communities summarise it as the golden rule: <strong>&#8220;only your tyres should touch the ground.&#8221;<\/strong> If your vehicle looks like it is parked, you are parked. If it looks like you have moved in, you are camping \u2014 and camping outside a designated area is where the \u20ac200 to \u20ac600 fines come from.<\/p>\n<p>This is exactly why a Tesla is such a good tool for this. There is no pop-top, no awning rail, no habitation door. Set up Camp Mode, close the door, and from the outside nothing is happening at all.<\/p>\n<h2>Country by Country: What Actually Changed in 2026<\/h2>\n<h3>Spain<\/h3>\n<p>The biggest package of changes. Since 1 January 2026, vehicles over 3.5 tonnes face restrictions in several tourist areas including Barcelona, Valencia, the Costa Brava and mountain roads such as the MA-10 on Mallorca, with fines of \u20ac200\u2013600 and possible impoundment. <strong>None of this applies to a Tesla<\/strong> \u2014 you are nowhere near 3.5 tonnes.<\/p>\n<p>What does apply to you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The 24-hour rule.<\/strong> In Asturias and Andalusia, police log your plate and enforce a 24-hour maximum stay in public parking. Moving a few metres down the same street usually does <em>not<\/em> reset the clock \u2014 you need to leave the area.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Llanes (Asturias), from 1 June 2026.<\/strong> Overnight stays are permitted only at the municipal La Tal\u00e1 site (86 spaces, 48-hour maximum). Daytime parking 09:00\u201322:00 is allowed in designated zones but with no awnings or tables deployed. Fines up to \u20ac500 plus towing, with a dedicated summer police patrol.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Carballo (Galicia).<\/strong> A \u20ac200 fine (\u20ac100 if paid early) for parking near the Razo beach boardwalk once signage goes up.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ibiza.<\/strong> You now need a confirmed campsite reservation just to bring a camper onto the island, and wild parking penalties run into five figures.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Formentera.<\/strong> Motorhomes and caravans are currently banned from the island entirely.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Practical takeaway:<\/em> in mainland Spain, park in a legal bay, keep everything inside, move on within 24 hours, and check for municipal signage. That combination is legal almost everywhere.<\/p>\n<h3>Greece<\/h3>\n<p>Good news. Greece has lifted the near year-long camper ban introduced in May 2025. Under a new police directive, parking is permitted again, with the main restriction being that vehicles over 7.5 metres cannot stay in one spot for more than 24 hours. A Tesla is not remotely close to that limit.<\/p>\n<h3>Austria<\/h3>\n<p>Be careful in Carinthia. Deliberately staying in one place for more than one night outside an official campsite counts as wild camping and is prohibited, with fines. The only exception is a genuine single-night rest due to extreme fatigue. Elsewhere in Austria, rules vary by state \u2014 a short rest stop is generally tolerated, a multi-night stay is not.<\/p>\n<h3>Andorra<\/h3>\n<p>Andorra started active enforcement this year under its General Tourism Accommodation Law. Overnighting or camping outside approved zones carries a <strong>\u20ac600 fine, reduced to \u20ac300 if paid on the spot<\/strong>, and unpaid fines lead to vehicle immobilisation. Police from three different units are running checks. Approved overnight sites include the Santa Creu, Casal, Janramon, Xixerella and Valira campgrounds; daytime parking is available at Terres Primeres, els Cortals d&#8217;Encamp, Feixes del Funicamp, Canrodes and Prat del Roure.<\/p>\n<h3>Hungary<\/h3>\n<p>Administratively simpler since 1 January 2026. Vehicles over 3,500 kg moved from the truck category to D2, so they only need an electronic vignette bought online rather than a special on-board unit. As a Tesla driver you just buy the standard D1 vignette \u2014 but it is worth knowing if you are travelling in convoy with a heavier vehicle.<\/p>\n<h3>United Kingdom<\/h3>\n<p>Enforcement stepped up across several regions in 2026:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>North Yorkshire.<\/strong> Permanent overnight bans for motorcaravans on specific coastal roads in Scarborough and Whitby, including Marine Drive and Royal Albert Drive, between 23:00 and 07:00.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Peak District.<\/strong> Red Routes introduced in May 2026 around Castleton and Mam Tor, including Old Mam Tor Road and Winnats Pass. No stopping, \u00a370 immediate fine, any vehicle.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Scottish Highlands.<\/strong> Under the 2026 pavement rule, parking with two wheels on the kerb \u2014 long used to keep single-track roads clear \u2014 is now a traffic obstruction, with fines of up to \u00a3100.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wales.<\/strong> Denbighshire restricted former free hotspots such as Marine Drive in Rhyl but opened six new short-stay motorhome bays in Ruthin, Corwen and Llangollen. Pembrokeshire launched a two-year trial with monitored overnight sites such as Goodwick Moor at \u00a310 per night, strictly one night maximum.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note that Scotland&#8217;s wild camping right under the Land Reform Act applies to tents and people on foot, <strong>not<\/strong> to vehicles. Sleeping in a car at the roadside is not covered by it.<\/p>\n<h3>Scandinavia \u2014 still the best in Europe<\/h3>\n<p>Norway&#8217;s <em>allemannsretten<\/em> and Sweden&#8217;s <em>allemansr\u00e4tten<\/em> remain unchanged and remain the most generous rules on the continent. You may stay one to two nights on uncultivated land at least 150 metres from the nearest inhabited house. The catch for drivers is that the right of access applies to you as a person, not to your vehicle \u2014 the car itself must still be legally parked. In practice this works beautifully: park in a legal lay-by or rest area, and sleep.<\/p>\n<h2>The Tesla Owner&#8217;s Legal Checklist<\/h2>\n<p>Follow these seven rules and you will be fine in the overwhelming majority of European locations.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Park in a legal, marked bay.<\/strong> Not on grass, not half on a verge, not blocking a gate or a passing place. If a normal car would be ticketed there, so will you.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Put nothing outside the car.<\/strong> No chairs, no table, no washing line, no cool box on the tarmac. This one rule prevents most fines.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Arrive late, leave early.<\/strong> Roll in after 20:00, be gone by 09:00. Councils enforce against visible daytime occupation far more than against a car that was there overnight.<\/li>\n<li><strong>One night, then move.<\/strong> The 24-hour rule is now the European default, and in Spain moving down the street does not reset it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Read the signage.<\/strong> Local municipal orders always override national law. A single pictogram of a crossed-out camper is legally binding.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Keep the interior tidy and the windows shaded.<\/strong> A car with sunshades up looks like a car with sunshades up. A car with a duvet pressed against the glass looks like a bedroom.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Never do it in a national park or protected area.<\/strong> This is where the biggest fines live and where enforcement is most active.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Gear That Keeps You Legal (and Comfortable)<\/h2>\n<p>The kit that makes discreet, rule-compliant overnighting work is different from full campsite kit. That is camping, and camping needs a campsite.<\/li>\n<li><strong>You need a shower and laundry.<\/strong> Three days in, this stops being optional.<\/li>\n<li><strong>You are staying more than one night in one place.<\/strong> The 24-hour rule makes this awkward almost everywhere.<\/li>\n<li><strong>You want a guaranteed charge.<\/strong> Many German <em>Stellpl\u00e4tze<\/em>, French <em>aires<\/em> and Nordic sites now offer 16A hook-ups, which is a slow but perfectly usable overnight top-up.<\/li>\n<li><strong>It is the shoulder season.<\/strong> At \u20ac10 an adult and \u20ac8.50 a pitch in September, the price argument for stealth parking largely evaporates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The Bottom Line<\/h2>\n<p>Europe is not banning sleeping in your car. It is banning turning public space into a private campsite \u2014 and it is aiming most of that enforcement at large recreational vehicles that block roads, occupy beachfront parking for a week and empty waste tanks in the wrong places.<\/p>\n<p>A Tesla parked correctly, with everything inside, moving on the next morning, sits comfortably on the right side of that line in most of Europe. Add Camp Mode, a flat mattress and mesh screens on the windows, and you have something no motorhome can offer: a silent, climate-controlled bedroom that is completely invisible as one.<\/p>\n<p>Be discreet, be tidy, read the signs, and leave nothing behind.
