Tesla Just Turned Your Car Into a Haunted House on Wheels — and Halloween Camping Will Never Be the Same

White Tesla Model Y decorated for Halloween with pumpkins and orange lights on a grass pitch at a European autumn campsite at dusk

Tesla pushed out its Halloween Mode on Tuesday 6 October 2026, and it is exactly the sort of silly, free, over-the-air nonsense that makes owning one of these cars fun. Software build 2026.38.3 turns the car into what Tesla calls a “haunted house on wheels” — spooky sound effects, flashing headlights when anyone walks up, a themed light show, a scary photobooth, a Halloween lock chime, and even the ability to talk through the car from your phone.

The timing is not an accident. Halloween lands on Saturday 31 October this year — a proper weekend night, right in the middle of the October half-term break in much of Europe. And European campsites have quietly worked out that Halloween is now one of the last big weekends of the season. Put those two things together and you get something genuinely new: a campsite pitch where the car itself is the attraction.

What You Actually Get in 2026.38.3

Tesla teased it on 1 October with a short clip of a car hiding under a ghost sheet, then shipped the full thing five days later. Here is the list:

  • Trick or Treat mode — plays spooky sounds and flashes the headlights when someone comes close. This is the one built for children arriving to ask for sweets.
  • A Halloween light show — the usual synchronised exterior show, rethemed.
  • Halloween wraps — your car’s avatar in the app gets a ghost costume, and there are new visual wraps to pick from.
  • A spooky lock sound — replaces the normal chirp.
  • A scary photobooth — take photos from inside the car, with themed frames.
  • Remote talking — speak into the Tesla app and the car plays your message back in its own voice.

The same update also adds automatic dipped-beam headlight adjustment on some cars, which is the genuinely useful bit buried under the novelty.

Two honest caveats. Tesla has not published which models, which countries or which software branch this needs — the update is expected on Model 3 and Model Y, with nothing confirmed for Model S, Model X or Cybertruck. And Tesla rolls updates out in waves, so check the Software menu in your car rather than assuming you have it.

Europe’s Campsites Already Have a Halloween Plan

This is the part people miss. Halloween is no longer a British or American thing that continental campsites ignore — it is now one of the best-programmed weekends of the whole autumn season.

Site / group Country What is on
KNAUS Campingpark Viechtach Germany Halloween special 29 Oct – 1 Nov, from €192
KNAUS Campingpark Lackenhäuser Germany Halloween special 30 Oct – 1 Nov, from €156
Holmsley Campsite UK (New Forest) “The Haunting at Holmsley”, Sat 31 Oct: fancy dress, decorated pitches, live band 7–9.30pm, spooky trail, silent disco. Day pitches £28.50 for up to six. Open until 2 Nov
HolaCamp Spain 30 Oct – 1 Nov: pitch and costume contests, trick-or-treating across four campsites
Taiga Campings & Resorts Spain Eight locations, weekends of 23–25 Oct and 30 Oct–1 Nov, plus 6–8 Nov at Taiga Lake Caspe
Tamarit Beach Resort Spain Four weekends, 16 Oct – 8 Nov, also its 65th anniversary season
Costa del Sol Glamping Village Spain (Fuengirola) 23–25 Oct and 30 Oct–1 Nov
Camping Cabo de Gata Spain (Andalucía) 30 Oct – 2 Nov: horror tunnel, costume contest, pitch decorating contest

Note the pattern: mostly Spain and Germany, mostly the last weekend of October, and mostly places that are still warm enough to sit outside after dark. That is very different from camping in November.

Why an Electric Car Is Weirdly Good at This

A petrol car cannot do any of it. Leave an engine running for a two-hour light show and you are that family. An electric car can run lights, sound and screens for an evening off the traction battery and make no noise at all — and “no noise” matters a lot at a campsite at ten at night with families asleep three pitches away.

Three practical notes before you turn the car into a disco:

  • Know the drain. Light shows and exterior sound are not free. On an overnight pitch, check the car the next morning rather than trusting it — and if you have a long drive home, run the show on arrival, not on the last night.
  • Don’t run the car’s battery for the small stuff. Fairy lights, a projector, phone charging — all of that is better off a separate battery. Keep the car’s range for driving.
  • Check the site rules on decorating. Several of the sites above run pitch-decorating contests, so decorations are welcome — but anything with an open flame near tent fabric or an awning usually is not. Battery lanterns and LED pumpkin lights solve that completely.

The Kit That Makes a Halloween Pitch Work

Assuming you are doing this properly — arriving Friday, staying through Saturday night, driving home Sunday — this is the short list:

  • Tesla Roof Top Tent — up in about ten minutes, off the damp ground, and it gives you somewhere to change into the costume without doing it in the front seat.
  • 2048Wh LiFePO4 Portable Power Station — this is the one that makes the whole evening work. Run the fairy lights, the projector and everyone’s phones off it, and leave the car’s battery alone so you can actually drive home on Sunday.
  • 35L Dual-Zone Compressor Fridge — a weekend with kids means drinks, snacks and something cold. A real compressor fridge beats a cool box and melted ice by a mile.
  • Tablet Mount Holder — cheap, and it turns the back seat into a movie screen for a rainy October afternoon when the trails are mud.
  • Magnetic Mesh Bug Screens — keep the windows cracked for airflow without letting in the October midge population.
  • Tesla Inflatable Air Mattress — for the extra people who always appear at the last minute.
  • Tesla Trunk Organiser Box — costumes, pumpkins, wellies and sweet wrappers. Without this, the boot becomes a single undifferentiated pile by Saturday morning.

The Bottom Line

Halloween Mode is free, it arrives over the air, and it lands on a Saturday night. European campsites from the New Forest to Andalucía are already programming for it, the weather in the south is still sitting outdoors after dark, and an electric car is the only vehicle that can be the entertainment without being the nuisance. Check your Software menu for 2026.38.3, book a pitch for the last weekend of October while they still exist — and sort the Tesla Roof Top Tent and the 2048Wh LiFePO4 Portable Power Station first. Those two decide whether it is a weekend people talk about or a weekend people endured.
