Tesla’s 2026.26 Summer Update Is Secretly a Camping Update: Set Arrival Energy, Preferred Routes & Grok Explained

Tesla published the release notes for its 2026.26 Summer Update on 21 July 2026 and began the global rollout days later. Owners in Germany, Sweden and Spain were among the first in Europe to receive the notification. The headlines went to Grok gaining real vehicle controls and to Caraoke getting a scoring system — the fun stuff.

But read the feature list as a camper rather than a commuter and something else emerges. Set Arrival Energy, Preferred Routes, Supercharger search by name, the new traction control modes and browser camera and microphone access are, collectively, the most road-trip-focused release Tesla has shipped in years. Almost none of it was marketed that way.

Here is what 2026.26 actually changes for European Tesla camping, feature by feature, with the settings paths you need and the hardware requirements that catch people out.

1. Set Arrival Energy — The Feature Campers Have Wanted for Years

This is the big one. You can now set the battery percentage you want remaining when you arrive, directly from the Tesla mobile app, before you even get in the car. The vehicle then plans its charging stops around that target rather than simply aiming to complete the journey.

Why this matters enormously for camping: Tesla’s route planner has always optimised for arriving efficiently, which historically meant arriving with 10-15% and a nervous evening ahead. For a camper that is the wrong objective entirely. You need enough charge for:

• Overnight Camp Mode — typically 8-15% of a Model Y battery depending on ambient temperature.
• The morning drive to the next charger, which may be 60-100 km away in rural Europe.
• An evacuation or weather reserve — genuinely relevant during the 2026 fire season, where a 50% floor is the recommended practice in high-risk regions.
• Detours when the campsite you planned is full, closed or simply disappointing.

How to use it: Open the location tab in the Tesla mobile app (version 4.58.0 or later), enter your destination, and tap Set Arrival Energy. For a European camping trip we recommend setting 60% for a remote pitch with no charging, 40% for a campsite with Type 2 destination charging, and 70% for anywhere in a red-alert fire zone.

2. Preferred Routes — Scenic Roads Over Fastest Roads

Tesla navigation has always defaulted to the fastest path. For a camping trip that is frequently the wrong answer: the fastest route is the motorway, and the reason you drove to the Dolomites was not to see the A22.

Preferred Routes makes navigation prioritise roads you have driven before rather than recalculating every journey as though it were your first. Drive the Route des Grandes Alpes once and the car starts respecting your choice on the way back. It still overrides your preference when there is serious traffic, which is the correct behaviour.

How to enable: Controls > Navigation > Online Routing must be switched on. Location data used for this feature is anonymous to Tesla and not linked to your vehicle.

3. Automatic Navigation — Useful at Home, Ignore It on Tour

Automatic Navigation now learns places you visit regularly — the gym, the school run, the weekly shop — and suggests them without you typing anything. Genuinely handy in daily life.

On a two-week European road trip it has nothing to learn, and suggestions based on your home routine are irrelevant 1,500 km away. Leave it on if you like it at home; it will not get in your way. Find it under Controls > Navigation > Automatic Navigation.

4. Grok Gains Real Vehicle Controls — And Why It Helps at Camp

Since July 2025 Grok has been a chatbot on a screen. The 2026 Spring Update added the “Hey Grok” wake word. The Summer Update finally gives it control of the car. Grok can now:

• Make phone calls
• Search and play music
• Adjust climate settings
• Open the glovebox
• Search through the Controls menu
• Answer questions about your Tesla and about the latest software update
• Set location-based reminders, with a choice of voice and personality

The camping use case is specific and real: at 2 a.m., inside a mattress-filled cargo area with the front seats pushed forward, you cannot physically reach the touchscreen. Being able to say “make it two degrees warmer” without crawling over a sleeping partner is a genuine quality-of-life improvement. Being able to ask “where is the Camp Mode setting” instead of hunting menus in the dark is another.

5. Three Traction Control Modes — The Sleeper Feature for Campsite Access

Buried at the bottom of the release notes, supported newer Model 3 and Model Y vehicles gain three selectable traction control modes. For anyone who has spun a wheel on a wet grass pitch, this is the most practically useful item in the entire update.

Note that the setting resets to Auto at the start of each drive, so you need to re-select it each time. Worth knowing before you assume the car has forgotten how to behave.

6. Everything Else Worth Knowing

The smaller items in 2026.26 that affect campers:

• Supercharger search by name — you can now find a station by its site name rather than working backwards from a town or address. Extremely useful when a forum or a fellow camper recommends a specific site.
• Browser camera and microphone access — the in-car web browser can now use the cabin camera and microphone while parked. Video calls from a campsite in the Alps, no laptop required. AMD-equipped vehicles only.
• Camera Preview outside Park — Controls > Service > Camera Preview now works while moving. Handy for checking a roof load or watching a narrow track.
• Rear Display Lock — rear passengers can watch content, but only the front row can change it. Parents on long camping drives will understand immediately.
• Caraoke with scoring — singing is now scored while parked, with high scores saved to your profile, and a QR code on the rear display lets passengers queue songs from their phones. A better rainy-evening activity than it sounds. Requires Premium Connectivity and an AMD processor.
• Custom wraps from the app — upload a custom wrap design from your phone via mobile app 4.59.0 or later (Creations > Wrap > Upload), no USB drive needed. Purely cosmetic, purely fun.
• Self-Driving stats in the app — view and share mileage and streaks from your phone.
• Apple Music queue management and a settable zoom level for the Self-Driving visualisation round out the release.

Meanwhile in Europe: FSD Demo Tours and Community Road Trips

Two things worth having on your radar for August 2026. First, Tesla is running a free FSD demonstration tour across Italy from 4 July to 30 August 2026, covering 32 stops from Capannori in the province of Lucca through to Porto Sant’Elpidio in the Marche. Tesla advisors are on site with Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, and the technology is not yet officially available in Italy — so this is currently the only way to experience it there. If your camping route crosses Tuscany, Umbria or the Adriatic coast this month, it is worth a detour.

Second, the European Tesla owner community is thriving. The Tesla Owners Club Belgium runs its tenth-anniversary Champagne Tour from 21 to 23 August 2026, limited to 30 vehicles. Regional clubs across Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and the UK organise similar convoy weekends throughout the summer. If you camp solo most of the time, a club run is a good way to find new routes and pitches.

When Will You Get 2026.26?

The rollout is gradual and staggered by region, vehicle and software branch. Seeing another owner on 2026.26 does not mean anything is wrong with your car. European deliveries began in late July, with Germany, Sweden and Spain reporting early. Connect to Wi-Fi regularly and keep automatic updates enabled to receive it sooner.

Note also that FSD improvements arrive through separate branches such as V14 and V14 Lite and are not part of the seasonal release. If you are waiting on FSD features specifically, 2026.26 is not the update you are looking for.
